ARES scholarships offer you the possibility of following a one-year bachelor’s or master’s degree or continuing education between 2 and 6 months in an establishment of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in Belgium.
Each year, ARES grants an average of 130 scholarships within the framework of bachelor’s degrees within the framework of continuing education to nationals of its partner countries.
Presentation of the scholarship
The Microfinance Specialized Master was launched in 2005 to meet a growing demand for training in development professions, particularly in microfinance.
Currently, the Microfinance Specialized Master is jointly organized by three European universities (Free University of Brussels, University of Mons and University of Paris-Dauphine) and four non-governmental organizations ADA, BRS, CERISE and SOS Faim.
The objective of the program is to train microfinance professionals from both the North and the South and to contribute to the strengthening of microfinance institutions in the world in accordance with the highest international standards.
The EMP offers a multidisciplinary approach to development issues in the microfinance sector.
The program combines solid theoretical foundations, practical knowledge and an internship in the field.
Admission is granted by the management committee of the European microfinance program on the basis of a commission for the evaluation of candidates.
Candidates for the one-year program must already hold a Master’s degree – 300 ECTS – (or a diploma considered equivalent by the jury) in one of the following disciplines: development cooperation, economics, agronomy, management or finance.
Eventually, other qualifications may be accepted.
Applicants should have field experience in developing countries.
Fluency in English is required.
The introduction of a scholarship application must be made according to the introduction procedures and meet the admissibility criteria described below.
The selection of scholarship holders is carried out by a selection panel for each course after analysis of their administrative admissibility by ARES.
All files received between the first and the last day of the call will be treated equally.
ARES encourages female candidates, for equal quality, the female candidate will be preferred.

For the application to be admissible, the candidate must:

- Hold a diploma comparable to a Belgian 1st cycle diploma
- Evidence of relevant professional occupation
- Complete the file in the language in which the training is given and can attest to a good written and spoken knowledge of it.
- Apply for one course only.
Selection criteria
The selection phase is carried out by a deliberative jury organized for each course.
ARES grants the selection jury the right to assess the compliance of the files with the common selection criteria described below, taken individually or in combination with each other.

Please note that compliance with the admissibility criteria does not in any way guarantee selection and eligibility for training.
Candidates do not have to obtain admission to one of the French-speaking higher education establishments in Belgium beforehand to be able to apply for ARES scholarships.
Applications must be submitted via GIRAF by January 28, 2022 at 12 p.m. (Belgian time, UTC+1) at the latest.
Applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
All successful and reserve applicants will receive an email upon completion of the selections (June 2022).
Unsuccessful applicants will receive an email by the end of June 2022 at the latest.
